My name is Annie.  It is my honor to have been invited by the good people from the Oklahoma Compost Conference to periodically share experiences about composting on a small scale and point you to the best resources .

OSU loves our volunteers!

If you’re new to composting, it may seem like a bit to bite off, but you don’t have to do it on your own!    The OSU Cooperative Extension office in Oklahoma County is starting a new program–Master Composter Volunteers!  As a new extension educator, I am excited to share University research and methods with home scale composters to increase the amount of community composting going on in my county, and around our state for that matter! If you are interested in training from OSU, gaining hands-on experience, and volunteer opportunities sharing composting with your community, call 405-713-2102 or email annie.napier@okstate.edu.

Giving Thanks

We are so grateful! Mr. J.D. built this beautiful 3 bin composting system for the Oklahoma County Cooperative Extension.

Remember, as the weather begins to cool–ONE benefit of compost is that it helps protect plants from drought and freezes when used as a soil amendment and mulch.  Just incorporate 1-2 inches of finished compost into the soil surrounding already established plants then lay a 2-4 inch layer on top of the soil to buffer cold temperatures and reduce evaporation of moisture from the soil.

Until next time,

Happy Composting

Annie
